Course Type:  Equipment operating

Course Purpose

This course is for a student whom has experience operating a truck mounted Folding Boom Crane (also known as a knuckle boom crane) and is preparing for the Level A operator's license.

This course does not include Rigging training.

Skill Level:  Experienced Operator

Training Method:  In person.

Class Size:  1 - 3 students

Training Duration:  8 hours

Training Locations

Alberta & British Columbia:  In person training at the customer's workplace.

Customer Requirements

Customer supplied crane and load for practical lessons.

Student Requirements

1. The driver of the crane must have a valid driver's license for the class of vehicle the crane is mounted on.
2. Be the minimum age for the worksite.
   
3. Wear the required Personal Protective Equipment (provided by student):
1. PPE as per the training location requirements.
2. Safety boots, hard hat, high visibility vest/jacket/overall.

Training Certification

Digital training card as proof of training, includes hyperlinked class photos and course material. Valid for 3 years.

Theory Lessons

1. Reference to applicable OHS Regulations (Federal, Provincial).
2. Reference to applicable CSA standards and ASME standards.
3. Review of Fulford Certification process for crane operators (applicable for AB and BC operators).
4. Operator responsibilities.
5. Hazard and Risk Assessment for operating the equipment safely in the workplace.
6. Safe approach limits to energized equipment and power lines.
7. Equipment stability and Stability Certificate.
8. Equipment inspection criteria.
9. Crane load chart comprehension.
10. Crane load calculations.

Practical Lessons

1. Hand signals.
2. Calculating loads and crane lifting capacity.
3. Staging a control zone.
4. Safe setup and stowage of the crane.
5. Inspecting the crane components.
6. Operating the crane (without a load).
7. Operating the crane (with a load).
8. Time target practice (as per the Fulford Practical Assessment criteria).
