Course Type

Safety Training.

Course Purpose

  • This course is for a worker whom is required to wear an Air Purifying Respirator in the workplace.
  • APR types covered: dust masks, quarter-face masks, half-face masks, full-face masks.
  • This course includes a respirator fit test with the student's personal half face piece respirator (student must be clean shaven).
  • This training is NOT intended for workers who require a supplied breathing air apparatus.

Level 1.

Training Method

In-person.

Class Size

3 - 16 students.

Training Duration

4 - 8 hours (depending on student's skill and knowledge).

Training Locations

  1. Calgary Region: In-person training at the customer's workplace.
  2. Metro-Vancouver Region: At OOSHEW's Surrey Training Facility or in-person training at the customer's workplace.

Student Requirements

  1. Student must be clean shaven where the respirator seals on the face if the student requires a respirator fit test.
  2. Wear the required Personal Protective Equipment (provided by student) as per the training location requirements.

Training Certification

Digital training card as proof of training, includes hyperlinked class photos and course material. Valid for 3 years.

  • Drop-In Class: $275.00 per student.
  • Private Group Rate: $2,000.00 (8 students) + $250.00 per additional student.

Theory Lessons

  1. Applicable OHS Regulations (Federal, Provincial).
  2. Applicable CSA Standards.
  3. Responsibilities for the Supervisor, Respirator User, Respirator Purchaser/Issuer and Respirator Fit Tester.
  4. Types of air purifying respirators.
  5. Types of filters and cartridges.
  6. Protection factors.
Documentation Lessons
  1. Completing an Exposure Control Plan (silica is the example).

Practical Lessons

  1. Referencing the Occupational Exposure Limits for hazardous substances.
  2. Referencing the NIOSH database for hazardous substances.
  3. Selecting the appropriate respirator.
  4. Selecting the appropriate filters and cartridges.
  5. Inspecting and cleaning a respirator.
  6. Properly donning and fitting a respirator.
  7. Seal test checking the respirator's fit (negative and positive seal check).
  8. Undergo a respirator fit test.
