Confined Space Hazard Assessment

Confined Space Hazard Assessment

OOSHEW's Confined Space Hazard Assessment course is an advanced program that teaches you how to correctly perform a hazard and risk assessment for entering and working inside a confined space. Using our proprietary digital assessment tool and a step-by-step course tutorial, you will build a complete assessment. From space characterization and gas testing through risk rating, entry procedures, rescue planning and auditing. Because our methodology is not specific to one jurisdiction, you can seamlessly apply it across Canada and the USA.

Flexible Delivery Formats to Suit Your Needs:

  • Self-Paced Online: Complete the training entirely on your own schedule.
  • Live Virtual Class: Join an interactive, instructor-led session via MS Teams.
  • Onsite Group Training: Employers can book an instructor to lead a private, in-person session right at their workplace.

What You’ll Learn

Our curriculum is structured into four core phases to take you from regulatory foundations to complete project documentation:

  • Regulatory Foundations & Scope: Learn how to find and apply the exact rules governing your workplace, including Canadian provincial/federal regulations, CSA Z1006, and US OSHA. Understand exactly what a hazard assessment must contain and how it differs from permits or rescue plans.
  • Space & Task Characterization: Master how to evaluate a space from the outside (structural design, dimensions, isolation needs) and identify the specific hazards created by the work tasks, tools, and materials being used.
  • Atmospheric Testing & Hazard Profiling: Deep dive into gas testing, atmospheric hazards (oxygen, flammables, toxic gases, VOCs), and the limitations of portable detectors. You will review our hazard library; covering biological, engulfment, and hazardous energy risks, and learn to calculate risk ratings based on probability and severity.
  • Procedures, Ventilation & Documentation: Develop actionable entry procedures, stop-work triggers, and ventilation calculations. Learn to plan for both non-entry and entry rescue, and wrap up with hands-on documentation, including independent audits, crew briefings, and pre-entry safety checklists.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for people who plan, assess, review, approve or manage work in confined spaces: OHS consultants, OHS professionals, OHS managers and coordinators, OHS officers, onsite supervisors, project managers, project coordinators and small business contractors.

This course include a Confined Space Entry Awareness knowledge base to read before starting the class, so a prerequisite course is not required. Basic confined space experience is helpful.

Please Note: this is a planning and documentation course. It does not train or authorize anyone to enter a confined space, act as an attendant or perform a rescue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are you able to provide in-person training at our workplace?

Yes, we can accommodate training directly at your workplace. Please note that instructor daily rates, travel, and accommodation fees may apply.

Does this course qualify me to enter a confined space or act as an attendant?

No. This course strictly teaches the assessment and planning required before any physical entry occurs. Hands-on entry, attendant, and rescue skills are taught separately in our practical Confined Space Entry and Attendant course.

Is this course specific to a single province like Alberta or British Columbia?

No. Confined space regulations differ between provinces, territories, federal jurisdictions, and the United States. This course teaches a universal methodology for finding and applying the exact rules that govern your specific worksite. For group exercises, the class will focus on a single Canadian jurisdiction to keep the training experience cohesive.

Can US students attend?

Yes. The assessment methodology fully applies to US worksites, and the course covers OSHA 1910.146 and 1926 Subpart AA at an awareness level. While the software's dropdown jurisdiction list is currently Canadian, US students simply select the class's designated jurisdiction and type their specific US regulatory references directly into the custom text fields.

What technology do I need?

You will need a laptop or desktop computer with a modern web browser (Chrome, Firefox, or Safari). Live online students also require Microsoft Teams with a functional camera, microphone, and speakers. The exam is completed on this same device. We strongly recommend using a second screen so you can view the instructor while simultaneously working inside the software.

Can I log in and complete the self-paced course on my mobile phone?

No. Because the course requires you to use our specialized online software, a desktop or laptop computer is required. The interface is not designed for mobile screens or tablets.

How long do I have access to the software after the course ends?

You retain access to the training material hosted on Superhuman Docs during the course and after you complete the course. However, access to our proprietary confined space hazard assessment software tool is limited strictly to the duration of your training session.

Do I need to prepare before a class?

Yes. There is approximately 30 minutes of required reading. You will need to review the Confined Space Entry Awareness knowledge base prior to the first session.

How is the exam administered?

The exam is hosted online and is completely open-book. You will answer randomly ordered, multiple-choice questions until you achieve 50 correct answers. If you do not pass on your first try, you are permitted multiple attempts.

Can we book a private training session for our own team?

Yes. Private group sessions are highly customizable and can be scheduled flexibly around your active project timelines. Please contact us directly for group pricing and availability.

Will this training certificate be accepted by my employer or regulator?

The digital training certificate serves as formal verification that you successfully completed this course and passed the exam. Because requirements vary, whether this satisfies a specific regulatory training mandate depends entirely on your local jurisdiction and your employer's policies. Please note that completing this course does not automatically designate you as a legally "competent" or "qualified" person.

Is there a renewal or refresher course available when my certificate expires?

Because regulations, standards (like CSA Z1006), and digital assessment tools evolve, we recommend retaking the full course every 3 years to renew your certificate, refresh your skills, and get up to speed on the latest updates.
