OOSHEW's Rigging Level 1 course gives workers the hands-on skills to safely inspect and use chain slings, wire rope slings, synthetic slings, and an assortment of rigging hardware. Delivered at our Surrey training facility or at your worksite across Calgary, Alberta and Metro Vancouver, BC. Practical lifting exercises with real rigging equipment are included, meeting Alberta OHS and WorkSafeBC requirements for workers involved in material lifting and handling.

What You’ll Learn

  1. Applicable occupational health and safety regulations for overhead lifting and the use of overhead lifting equipment (Alberta, British Columbia, Federal).
  2. Hazards and risks in the workplace related to overhead lifting and handling.
  3. Roles and responsibilities for the employer, supervisor and rigger.
  4. Requirements for a lifting plan and an emergency response plan.
  5. Rigging hand signals along with practical exercises with co-students.
  6. Rigging calculations with practice exercises.
  7. Sling tension calculations along with practical rigging to observe the sling tension.
  8. Material and load calculations.
  9. Criteria for rigging equipment inspections.
  10. Use of and application of rigging equipment, taglines and rope knots.

Note: If you are planning on challenging your Level A Crane Operator Assessment, consider enrolling in Rigging Level 2. Level 2 dedicates additional instructional time for load calculations, rigging calculations and for understanding the Level A Assessment criteria.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for workers and supervisors who lift and handle loads with the use of lifting equipment; and for the managers responsible for those employees and contractors. Lifting equipment learned during this training is commonly known as “below the hook” lifting devices or “rigging equipment”.

Class Size: range from 4 to 16 students. 10 students is the average.

Duration: 1 day (7 - 9 hours), depending on student expertise, knowledge and English language competency.

Training Location AB: at the client’s workplace.

Training Location BC: OOSHEW’s Surrey training facility or the client’s workplace.

Equipment: OOSHEW provides all the necessary equipment for the training when hosted at OOSHEW, the client can request to use their specific equipment.

Equipment Note: when training is hosted at the client’s workplace, the instructor will bring a sample of rigging equipment, it is encouraged for the client to supply the rigging equipment their workers normally use.

Rigging Training Certificate

Successfully completed students receive a digital training certificate, valid for 3 years, recognized by employers across Canada. The training certificate includes unique features: student’s photo, name, ID#, certificate ID#, link to the class photo album, link to the course material, and link to this course information page.

Do you provide training in other cities?

Yes, travel fees and accommodation may apply.

Can we run the training virtually?

Yes, we have provided training using MS Teams and Zoom for clients in remote locations and for clients where students are stationed at numerous locations.

Can we run two courses in a single day?

Yes if we can accommodate the schedule for both the client and instructor.

What PPE is required during the training?

Comfortable shoes (no high heels or sandals) and comfortable clothes (jeans, sweats, t-shirt, hoodie) are suitable at our OOSHEW training facility in Surrey. PPE workwear is required if the training is held at a client’s workplace, the employer will inform the instructor and students of the expectations.

What kind of “rigging” is this training for?

The rigging principles learned and equipment used during training are for lifting loads (material, equipment) using “below the hook” lifting equipment. This equipment is connected (rigged) to the load, and the load is lifted via the rigging with powered lifting equipment like a crane, excavator, hoist or lift truck equipped with a hook. This course is not for rigging used on sailboats, tree cutting, or rigging lights & sound equipment for theatre or film & movie productions.

What equipment will I learn to use during the training?

During your training you will learn how to use a variety of rigging equipment: lifting slings (chain, rope, synthetics, wire rope), shackles, eye bolts, hoist rings, clamps, clutches, chain fall (chain hoist), and ropes.

Is my training certificate valid in Alberta and British Columbia?

Yes, the training covers commonalities between Alberta, British Columbia and Canadian Federal OHS regulations. The training certificate does not state validity for only one province, location or employer.

Is online rigging training accepted on Alberta and British Columbia worksites?

Online-only training is generally not accepted on most worksites in Alberta and British Columbia, as regulators and employers expect practical, hands-on competency demonstration. OOSHEW's training includes practical exercises with real equipment to meet this requirement.
